Almost Heaven can get you a USA-made cedar barrel with a Harvia heater and a lifetime warranty on the room for under $4,500 direct, or about $3,000 at Costco. Here’s how to pick the right model and what the fine print leaves out.

Our verdict: Almost Heaven is the best value among established traditional sauna brands, and its flagship barrels score 8.8 to 8.9 out of 10 on our rubric. You get red cedar, a heater in the box and a limited lifetime room warranty. The tradeoffs are thin 1-3/8 in staves, no roof on most barrels, a heater warranty of only 1 year on the elements, and owner complaints about missing parts and generic manuals.

Who Almost Heaven is

Almost Heaven Saunas was founded in 1977 in West Virginia’s Greenbrier Valley, where it still builds its saunas. Its about page says it joined the Harvia family in 2019. Harvia is the Finnish heater maker, which is why every Almost Heaven sauna ships with a Harvia heater.

Two things to know before you shop:

  • Not every model is USA-made. The newer Harvia Collection (Kuuma, Magnus, Evander, Takoa barrels and several cabins) lists Romania as the country of origin, and so does the Sutton indoor sauna. The core cedar barrels and most indoor cabins say “proudly manufactured in the USA.”
  • almostheaven.com is not almostheaven.net. Reddit threads mix the two up. This review covers almostheaven.com, the West Virginia maker. Almostheaven.net is a separate precut kit seller.

Almost Heaven also makes Costco’s US barrel and outdoor cabin saunas, sold under Costco model names.

Almost Heaven lineup and prices

Prices are from almostheaven.com on October 13, 2026, when a 20% “Fall Favorites” sale was running. The banner says it ends October 31.

Cube and Harvia Collection

The Blackwater 4-person cube is $14,085 regular ($11,268 sale). The Romanian-made Harvia Collection is a step up in price: Kuuma barrel $14,132, Takoa $15,273, Magnus $16,558 and Evander $17,653, with outdoor cabins from $14,233 (Timberline) to $39,735 (Alpina).

Barrel vs cabin: which Almost Heaven to buy

This is the main choice, and it comes down to climate, headroom and budget.

Cedar barrel (Salem, Watoga, Princeton) Outdoor cabin or cube (Oasis, Escape, New Haven) Indoor cabin (Serena, Rainelle)
Starting price from $4,485 direct; around $3,000 at Costco around $5,000 at Costco $4,725
Headroom Full only along the center line Full across the floor Full across the floor
Bench levels One Multi-level on Oasis and Escape Varies by model
Walls 1-3/8 in cedar staves, no insulation Western red cedar walls 1-3/8 in tongue-and-groove (Rainelle)
Roof Not listed as standard Part of the design Inside your house
Wiring 240V 30A (6 kW) or 40A (8 kW) 240V 30A or 40A 240V 30A or 40A

Pick a barrel if you want the lowest price and live where winters are mild. A Sun Home guide notes barrels hold about 21% less air than a matching box but have full height only along the center. Our barrel sauna guide covers the tradeoffs in depth.

Pick an outdoor cabin or cube if you want a second bench level and better weather protection. Almost Heaven sells these mostly through Costco.

Pick an indoor cabin if you have a basement, garage or large closet. The Serena at $4,725 is the best value in the line, and it includes the heater.

How Almost Heaven scores on our rubric

The flagship cedar barrels (Salem, Watoga) and indoor cabins (Serena, Rainelle, Bridgeport) all score 8.8 to 8.9 out of 10.

Score breakdown: Almost Heaven Salem 2-Person Barrel Sauna

Calculated from specs, warranty terms and owner data with our published rubric. How we score

FactorWeightScoreWhy
Heat performance28%10.06 kW for about 160 cubic feet (132% of the 1 kW per cubic meter rule).
Build and materials22%10.0Rustic red cedar, 1-3/8 in ball-and-socket lumber.

Owner feedback11%4.0Owner rating not listed by the manufacturer.
Value for price11%9.8Quality score 8.8, +1 for price band.
  • Heat performance: 10. Heater kW is generous for the room volume under our rubric.
  • Build and materials: 10. Red cedar earns top marks.
  • Warranty: 10. Limited lifetime on the room. Note the heater is covered for much less.
  • Electrical: 6. Every model needs a hardwired 240V circuit.
  • Owner feedback: 4. This is a missing-data score. Almost Heaven’s reviews page did not show a rating count, and Costco listings show zero member reviews.
  • Value: 8.8 to 9.8. Models under $5,000, including the Salem, the Serena and the Costco Arcadia, score highest on value.

Lower scores in the family come from specific tradeoffs. The Pinnacle scores 7.2 because a 6 kW heater is stretched in its larger barrel. The Kuuma scores 6.1 because it costs about three times the cedar barrels.

Our rubric’s heat score uses Harvia’s own guidance of 1 kW per cubic meter (about 35 cu ft), applied to exterior dimensions. Harvia also multiplies the volume by 1.5 for uninsulated log walls, which the rubric does not apply. By that stricter math, a 6 kW heater in a 4-person barrel sits near the top of its range, which matters in cold climates.

Warranty: what the fine print says

The Almost Heaven warranty reads well at the top and gets narrower below.

  • Room: limited lifetime against manufacturing defects.
  • Harvia heater: 1 year on the heating elements (coils) and 5 years on other heater parts.
  • Who and where: non-transferable, contiguous US only.
  • Excluded: normal weathering and wear, improper use or assembly, weather events, salt or hard water corrosion, and electrician costs.

The weathering exclusion matters most for barrels, which sit outside with no roof as standard. Wood care is on you. The 1-year element coverage is short too, so keep your receipt and register the heater.

Compared with rivals, Almost Heaven’s room coverage beats Redwood Outdoors (1 year on the structure) and SaunaLife and Dundalk (5 years per most listings).

Heat-up, heaters and electrical

Almost Heaven does not publish a single heat-up figure. Costco’s listing text for the Almost Heaven-made Arcadia says 165F to 180F in about 30 to 45 minutes, and a summary of Costco owner feedback by Care Focus Daily says about 30 minutes. The Costco Oasis cube is rated to 190F.

Heater options on direct barrels include the Harvia KIP with dials, KIP Smart with Fenix control, Spirit Smart with Fenix, and on some models Virta Smart with Fenix. No wood-burning option is listed on the USA cedar barrels we checked. The Harvia Collection barrels offer the Harvia M3 wood-burning kit.

Wiring:

  • 6 kW heaters: 240V, 30A, hardwired
  • 8 kW heaters: 240V, 40A, hardwired
  • Lighting on barrels: a separate 120V, 15A plug

Use a licensed electrician, and check with your local building department because a permit may be needed. Professional assembly is available from $1,400, and lead times run 6 to 8 weeks on the Watoga and 8 to 12 weeks on the Magnus.

Running cost is low. At the EIA’s July 2026 average of 18.31 cents per kWh, a 6 kW heater at full draw for an hour costs about $1.10.

What Almost Heaven owners report

Almost Heaven’s reviews page did not display a star rating or count when we checked, so there is no brand rating to cite. Costco listings show zero member reviews. Here are the themes that repeat.

Praise:

  • Easy assembly, often two people in a few hours
  • Cedar quality and fit
  • Customer service, the most common compliment, with named staff sending replacement parts fast
  • Frequent daily use

Complaints:

  • Missing or defective parts: screws, trim, thermometer, a door knob, a cracked panel (usually replaced quickly)
  • Instructions not specific to the model, which Garage Gym Reviews also noted on the Costco Morgan
  • Trouble reaching temperature until the sensor was moved
  • Surprise that the heater must be hardwired
  • Mislabeled panels and snapped screws
  • One delivery delay over November to January

Costco buyers add confusing instructions (many used YouTube), a glass door that fogs and no winterizing guidance, per Care Focus Daily. One owner reports even graying after 3 years with one reseal.

Retailer Sauna Marketplace reviewed 1,172 support threads across brands, 178 involving barrels. The common barrel issues were doors installed proud of the wall, over-tightened door frame screws bowing the frame, reversed magnetic door parts, stones packed too tight (tripping the high limit) and hidden shipping damage found after signing a clean receipt. Sauna Marketplace is a competing retailer, so weigh that accordingly.

Almost Heaven at Costco vs buying direct

Costco sells Almost Heaven barrels and outdoor rooms under its own names: Arcadia, Morgan, Sierra, Vista, Emerson, Ripley, Oasis, Escape and New Haven, plus the Sanctum and Sutton indoor cabins.

The price gap is real. The Arcadia 2-person was around $2,999.99 in warehouses on October 13, 2026, per the Warehouse Runner tracker, about $1,500 less than the Salem direct. July 2026 prices reported by Ice Cold Tubs put the 6-person Emerson at $6,299.99 and the Vista at $6,399.99.

What you give up at Costco:

  • Model choice: fewer heater and door options
  • Confirmed specs: Costco SKUs have their own names and specs, so a one-to-one match with a direct model is not confirmed
  • Warranty clarity: Costco pages link to the manufacturer’s warranty without stating terms
  • Delivery: curbside only on most models

Buy at Costco for the lowest price on a 2-person barrel or the Oasis cube. Buy direct for heater and control choices, Quick Ship, pro installation and the indoor line. We cover every Costco model in our Costco barrel sauna review.

Safety

Saunas appear safe for most healthy adults, per Harvard Health, but talk to your doctor first if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, or take medication. Keep sessions to 15 to 20 minutes, never use a sauna alone or after alcohol, drink water afterward and cool down gradually.
