Why our reviews are built on data
A sauna or cold plunge is a $500 to $16,000 decision, and the details that make or break it are buried in spec sheets, wiring diagrams and warranty fine print. That is where we spend our time. We compare every product line by line, track what owners report after months of use, and score everything with the same published rubric so you can see exactly why one product ranks above another.
Our scores come from this research and data rather than from in-house lab testing. When a page says a sauna heats fast or a chiller holds 39F, we tell you whether that comes from the manufacturer or from owners.
Our research process
- Spec collection. We pull dimensions, heater type and power, voltage and amps, wood, chiller horsepower, filtration and capacity from manufacturer spec sheets, owner's manuals and major retailer listings. Each spec is stored with the link it came from and the date we checked it. If we cannot verify a spec, the page shows "Not listed." We never guess.
- Warranty review. We read the warranty page itself, not the marketing summary, and note how long each part is covered.
- Electrical requirements. We note whether a product plugs into a standard 120V outlet or needs a 240V dedicated circuit, because that changes the real cost of owning it.
- Owner feedback. We summarize public owner reviews on brand and retailer sites. Every rating we show names the source, the number of reviews and the date we checked. We never invent quotes or customer stories.
- Manufacturer claims. EMF levels, heat-up times and health claims are reported as the manufacturer's claims. EMF numbers are always "manufacturer-reported," never our own measurements.
- Scoring. We run every product through the rubric below. The score is calculated by code from the product data, so the same specs always give the same score.
- Updates. Prices change often, so we show them as "around $X" with the date we checked. When we change our picks, the page's changelog says what changed and when.
The scoring rubric
Each factor gets a score from 0 to 10. The product's score is the weighted average. If a factor does not apply (EMF for a traditional sauna, for example), we drop it and spread its weight across the other factors. If a manufacturer does not publish the data a factor needs, that factor scores 4 out of 10. Missing data should not help a product.
Saunas and sauna heaters
| Factor | Weight | How it is scored |
|---|---|---|
| Heat performance | 25% | Traditional saunas: we divide heater kW by the room volume in cubic feet (from exterior dimensions) and compare it to the sizing rule Harvia and HUUM publish: 1 kW per cubic meter (about 1 kW per 35.3 cubic feet). At or above the rule scores 10, 85% of it scores 7, 70% scores 5, and below that scores 2. Infrared saunas: full spectrum heaters score 9 and far infrared heaters score 7. Carbon or carbon-ceramic panels add 1 point. Sauna heaters: a published room size range scores 8. No published range scores 4. |
| Build and materials | 20% | Thermowood or red cedar: 10. Nordic or white spruce: 8. Hemlock or basswood: 7. Other woods: 6. Portable soft-sided saunas score 5. Sauna heaters drop this factor. |
| Warranty and support | 15% | Lifetime: 10. 10 years or more: 9. 5 to 9 years: 7. 3 to 4 years: 5. 1 to 2 years: 3. |
| Electrical and install ease | 10% | 120V plug-in with no dedicated circuit: 10. 120V on a dedicated circuit, or 120V where the manufacturer does not say, is 8. 240V hardwired: 6. Wood-fired (no electrical work, but a chimney): 7. |
| Manufacturer EMF data and transparency | 10% | Infrared saunas only. A published third-party EMF test report: 10. A manufacturer EMF claim with no report: 6. No EMF information: 2. |
| Owner feedback | 10% | We blend the published average rating with a neutral 4.0 out of 5, weighted as if it were 25 extra reviews, so a 5.0 from a handful of buyers does not beat a 4.7 from thousands. The blended rating maps 3.0 to 0 and 5.0 to 10. |
| Value for price | 10% | We start from the product's score on the other factors, then adjust by price band. Saunas: under $2,000 adds 2, under $5,000 adds 1, under $10,000 adds 0, $10,000 or more subtracts 1. Heaters use $600, $1,200 and $2,500. Cold plunges and chillers use $1,000, $4,000 and $8,000. |
Cold plunges and chillers
| Factor | Weight | How it is scored |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling performance | 30% | Lowest rated water temperature: 37F or colder scores 10, 39F scores 9, 42F scores 7, 45F scores 5, warmer scores 3. A chiller of 1 HP or more adds 0.5. Tubs sold without a chiller score 2. |
| Filtration and sanitation | 20% | A listed filter adds 5 points and a listed sanitation method (ozone, UV) adds 5. Neither scores 2. |
| Build and insulation | 15% | Hard-sided tubs start at 7 and inflatable or soft tubs at 4. Listed insulation adds 2. Chiller-only products drop this factor. |
| Warranty | 15% | Lifetime: 10. 10 years or more: 9. 5 to 9 years: 7. 3 to 4 years: 5. 1 to 2 years: 3. |
What a score does not mean
A score tells you how a product looks on paper: its specs, warranty, electrical needs, owner feedback and price. It cannot tell you how a specific unit will hold up in your backyard. Use it to build a short list, then read the warranty and the manufacturer's install guide before you buy.
