A wood burning sauna stove can heat an outdoor sauna with no 240V circuit, no electrician and no power bill. Here’s how to pick one that fits your room, your chimney and your clearances.
The best wood burning sauna stove for most outdoor saunas is the HUUM HIVE Wood 13. It holds 199 lb of stones, is rated for 212 to 459 cubic feet and carries a 3-year private-use warranty, from around $2,150 for the stove alone. On a budget, the Harvia M3 covers the same room range for around $969, with a much smaller 66 lb stone load.
We broke down the specs on 9 wood stoves from Harvia, HUUM, Narvi and Finnleo, including rated room size, stone capacity, flue size and clearances to combustibles. That last number decides where a stove can go, and it ranges from under 6 in to nearly 20 in at the sides.

How to choose a wood burning sauna stove
A sauna stove is not a household wood stove. It holds a cage or chamber of stones that store heat and make steam when you ladle water on them. Pick by room size first, then clearances and chimney, then extras like water tanks and outside feeding.
Size it to your room volume
Measure length x width x height at the highest point of the ceiling. Harvia’s wood heater guide says to measure at the peak, and that poorly insulated saunas, outdoor saunas and cold climates need a larger stove. It does not give a number for how much larger.
HUUM adds that a wood stove should have some reserve power so it does not run flat out all the time. In practice, choose a stove whose rated range puts your room in the middle or lower half, not right at the top.
Barrels and log walls lose heat faster. Harvia’s electric sizing rule multiplies uninsulated log wall volume by 1.5, and the same logic applies to choosing a stove with headroom. Our sauna heater size calculator gives you the adjusted volume.
Clearances decide where it can go
Every stove lists minimum distances to combustible materials like wood walls and benches. They vary more than most buyers expect:
- HUUM HIVE Flow: 6 in at the sides and back, 20 in in front, 40 in above
- Narvi NC: 5.91 in at the sides and rear, 19.69 in in front
- Harvia M3: 9.84 in at the sides, 11.81 in front and back, 47 in to the ceiling
- HUUM HIVE Wood 13: 7.48 in at the sides, 9.8 in behind, 35.5 in in front, 47.3 in above
- HUUM HIVE Wood 17: 19.7 in at the sides and rear, 39.4 in in front
Heat shields and sheaths cut these numbers. Harvia’s WL450 sheath brings the M3’s side and rear clearance down to 2 in, and the WL200 sheath brings the Legend 150 to 1.2 in. In a small barrel, that can be the difference between a stove fitting or not.
Chimney and flue
Most European sauna stoves have a 115 mm (about 4.5 in) flue outlet. The Harvia M3 product record notes that this needs an adapter for 6 in US chimney systems. Budget for the chimney separately: HUUM’s barrel chimney kit for the HIVE Flow alone is listed at $1,559.
Stones, chimney pipe and floor protection are extra on nearly every stove here. Price the full install, not just the stove.
Stone mass
More stone means softer, steadier heat and more steam per ladle. The spread is wide: 66 lb in the Harvia M3, 132 lb in the Narvi NC 20, 199 lb in the HUUM HIVE Wood 13, 264 lb in the Harvia Legend 150, and 330 lb in the HUUM HIVE Flow. Heavy stoves take longer to come up to temperature and hold heat longer after the fire dies down.
Water tanks and through-wall feeding
Some stoves heat wash water. The Harvia Pro 20 LS and RS have 30 L side tanks, the Pro 20 ES has a built-in tank, and add-on smoke-pipe heaters fit the M3 (WP220ST, around $727) and Legend 150 (WP250LD, 25 L, around $989).
Through-wall stoves are loaded from a changing room through a non-combustible wall, which keeps ash and smoke out of the hot room. Options include the Harvia M3 SL (around $1,416) and Pro 20 SL, and HUUM’s HIVE Wood 17 LS and HIVE Flow LS.
Permits and insurance
A wood stove adds a fire source to your property. Check with your local building department before you build, since a building permit may be needed (Topture puts structure permits at about $50 to $500). Call your home insurer before installation, and follow the stove manual for floor protection and chimney height.

HUUM HIVE Wood 13: Best Overall Wood Burning Sauna Stove
The HIVE Wood 13 is the best balance of stone mass, room size, warranty and price we found. It holds 199 lb of stones, about triple the Harvia M3, so it gives softer heat in the most common outdoor sauna size.
Key specs:
- 13 kW, rated for 212 to 459 cubic feet
- 199 lb (90 kg) stone capacity
- 4.53 in (115 mm) top flue outlet; chimney minimum 15.81 sq in
- Clearances: 7.48 in sides, 9.8 in behind, 35.5 in front, 47.3 in above
- Made in Estonia
- Around $2,150 to $2,618 for the stove at Topture; packages around $4,372 to $4,700
Owner feedback: Topture shows a 5.0 average from 8 reviews, some grouped from related products. HUUM’s brand-level Trustpilot page is weak (2.0 from 15 reviews), but those complaints center on electric heater elements and app controls, and one reviewer there praised the HIVE wood stove’s design and quality.
The warranty fine print shows 3 years for private use and 1 year for commercial use, with door glass, ash grate and stones excluded. That beats Harvia’s 2 years.
Pros:
- Heavy stone load for its price
- 3-year private-use warranty
- Fits the most common outdoor sauna size
Cons:
- Needs 35.5 in in front of the door
- Stove alone costs more than double a Harvia M3
Harvia M3: Best Budget Wood Stove
The M3 is the lowest-priced name-brand sauna stove we found. It is a simple steel box with a proven track record, and it covers the same 212 to 459 cubic foot range as the HIVE Wood 13.
Key specs:
- 16.5 kW, rated for 212 to 459 cubic feet per Harvia’s US spec page
- Up to 66 lb (30 kg) of stones
- 4.5 in (115 mm) flue on top or rear
- Clearances: 9.84 in sides, 11.81 in front and back, 47 in to ceiling; the WL450 sheath cuts sides and rear to 2 in
- Optional WP220ST water heater around $727
- Around $969 at Topture
Owner feedback is thin: 2 reviews on Topture, both 5.0. The stone load is the tradeoff. At 66 lb, the M3 gives quicker but spikier heat than the heavy HUUM and Legend stoves. Warranty is 2 years per Topture, stones excluded. A through-wall M3 SL runs around $1,416.
Pros:
- Lowest entry price from a major brand
- Optional water heater and through-wall version
- Sheath option for tight barrels
Cons:
- Small 66 lb stone capacity
- Needs a flue adapter for 6 in US chimney systems
- 2-year warranty
HUUM HIVE Flow: Best for Soft Heat and Tight Spaces
The HIVE Flow holds 330 lb of stones, the largest load in this group, yet needs only 6 in of clearance at the sides and back. That combination is rare: big thermal mass in a stove you can tuck close to a wall.
Key specs:
- 9.8 kW, rated for 282 to 635 cubic feet
- 330 lb (150 kg) of stones
- 4.5 in flue, T450 rated, minimum 16 sq in
- Clearances: 6 in sides and back, 20 in front, 40 in above
- Made in Estonia
- Around $2,898 to $3,221 at Sauna Marketplace; Topture shows around $3,129
The lower 9.8 kW output paired with a heavy stone load is designed for slow, even heat. Stones, chimney and floor protection are extra, and the barrel chimney kit alone is $1,559. Sauna Marketplace also showed a sold-out waitlist notice, so availability may vary. A through-wall LS version and a smaller Flow Mini (8.5 kW, 212 to 494 cubic feet, 231 lb of stones) are also sold.
Pros:
- Largest stone load we found
- Very low side and rear clearances
- Wide 282 to 635 cubic foot range
Cons:
- Expensive once the chimney kit is added
- Availability was limited at one retailer
HUUM HIVE Wood 17: Best for Large Outdoor Saunas
When your room tops 450 cubic feet, the HIVE Wood 17 adds output and 287 lb of stones. The LS version is fed from an adjacent room through a non-combustible wall.
Key specs:
- 17 kW, rated for 283 to 565 cubic feet
- 287 lb (130 kg) of stones
- Clearances: 19.7 in sides and rear, 39.4 in front, 47.3 in above
- Around $4,929 to $5,257 for packages at Topture (LS packages around $4,680 to $5,008)
The large side clearances are the catch. In a narrow sauna, the HIVE Flow may fit where this one does not.
Pros:
- High output plus heavy stone mass
- Through-wall LS option
Cons:
- 19.7 in side and rear clearance
- Sold mostly as a higher-priced package
Harvia Legend 150: Best With a Water Heater Option
The Legend is Harvia’s heavy stone tower: up to 264 lb in a stone-clad body, rated for the same 212 to 459 cubic feet as the M3.
Key specs:
- 16 kW, rated for 212 to 459 cubic feet
- Up to 264 lb (120 kg) of stones
- 4.5 in flue
- Clearances: 7.9 in sides, 9.8 in rear, 19.7 in front, 39.4 in ceiling; the WL200 sheath cuts sides and rear to 1.2 in
- Optional WP250LD 25 L water heater around $989
- Around $2,089 at Topture
It costs about double the M3 and carries the same 2-year warranty, with Harvia US Inc. named as the North American warrantor. No owner rating was published on the retailer page.
Pros:
- Four times the M3’s stone capacity
- Sheath option for very tight spaces
- Hot water add-on
Cons:
- About double the M3 price
- 2-year warranty
Narvi NC 20: Best Finnish Box Stove
Narvi builds its stoves in Finland, and the NC line has some of the lowest side and rear clearances we found at 5.91 in.
Key specs:
- 16 kW, rated for about 283 to 706 cubic feet
- 132 lb of stones (NC 16: 110 lb, NC 24: 176 lb)
- Clearances: 19.69 in front, 5.91 in sides and rear
- 2-year limited residential warranty
- NC line priced around $1,695 to $2,495 at Sauna Marketplace, no per-model price shown
The retailer does not state the flue diameter, so confirm the chimney adapter you need before ordering.
Pros:
- Made in Finland
- Low side and rear clearances
- Wide rated room range
Cons:
- Per-model price and flue size not published
- 2-year warranty
Harvia Pro 20: Best Built-In Water Tank
The Pro series is the pick if you want hot wash water from the stove itself. The Pro 20 LS (left) and RS (right) carry 30 L side tanks, the ES has a built-in tank, and the SL is fed through the wall.
Key specs:
- 24.1 kW output, 88 lb of stones
- Described by the retailer as Finnish-made
- 2-year consumer warranty, 6 months commercial
- Series priced around $1,559 to $2,364 at Sauna Marketplace
The retailer does not publish a rated room volume for the Pro series, which is why it scores low in our rubric. Ask the seller for the room range before you buy.
Pros:
- Built-in water tank versions
- High output for big rooms
Cons:
- No published room range
- No per-model price
Other stoves we compared
Narvi Kuru 20 (line around $1,195 to $1,395): the cheapest Narvi, rated about 283 to 494 cubic feet, made in Finland. It lists only a 1-year warranty, and the retailer’s sizing and flue data do not fully line up.
Finnleo Karhu 20 Home: rated by Finnleo for 282 to 702 cubic feet outdoors, with 70 lb of rock capacity. Finnleo publishes no price, kW or warranty terms, so you buy it through a dealer.
Kuuma: hand-built in Tower, Minnesota by Lamppa Manufacturing, and a forum owner replacing a 43-year-old stove praised the company’s build quality (Arboristsite). Kuuma’s site blocked our checks, so we could not verify any price, room size, clearance or warranty. Contact Lamppa directly. Do not confuse the stove with the Almost Heaven “Kuuma” barrel sauna, which is a sauna model name (Almost Heaven review).
Wood or electric
Pick wood if your sauna is off-grid, far from your panel, or you want the ritual of a fire. You skip a 240V circuit, which can cost $1,500 to $3,800 or more for an outdoor run (see home sauna cost). Pick electric if you want push-button heat and a thermostat. Our electric sauna heaters roundup covers those, and Harvia vs HUUM compares the two biggest brands.

Safety notes
- Install: follow the stove manual for clearances, floor protection and chimney. Check with your local building department about permits, and tell your home insurer before you light the first fire.
- Fire: never leave a lit stove unattended, and keep towels and benches outside the listed clearances.
- Health: talk to your doctor first if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, or take medications that affect sweating or blood pressure (Cleveland Clinic).
- Use: Harvard Health advises no more than 15 to 20 minutes per session. Avoid alcohol before and during use, do not sauna alone if you are at risk, and get out right away if you feel dizzy.
